Erosion protection matting – There is a wide range of erosion control blankets on the market. However, most applications drop into two categories: those with an easy-to-degrade element and those made entirely of polymer, designed to last longer. In fact, most erosion control mats allow you to create and maintain soil cover. In most cases, vegetation provides most of the beneficial effects associated with erosion prevention. Therefore, when choosing an erosion control product. We need to consider what we can incentivize to grow there, how long it will take to establish itself, and how we can sustain that growth throughout the seasons.
Applications of Coir Geotextile | Erosion protection mats
The use of coconut geotextile for erosion control will be beneficial in the following applications:
• River banks and wetlands
• Shores of lakes/reservoirs
• Earthen dams
• Liners and surge basins
• Spill covers
• Embankments and slopes (e.g., roads and railways)
• Noise dividers
• Channel/spillway protection
Using Coir Geotextiles to Control Erosion
Erosion protection coir geotextiles mats can be used effectively in many situations. Whether erosion control is required above, at, or below water level or on dry slopes, the right coir geotextile option is available for any condition. A flexible three-dimensional matrix of coconut fiber geotextile is suitable for any smooth surface. Coconut erosion protection mats are laid in prepared soil free of stones, clods, roots, and other irregularities.
Once fixed, the erosion control layer can be seeded and filled with soil or mulch. Its open structure provides space for dirt and encourages root and plant growth. As the roots grow, they become entangled in the connected threads, anchoring the vegetation and creating a solid cover. Coconut geotextile is also an excellent reinforcement for a lawn. Coconut geotextile has been tested by many independent associations.Minimizing the Use of Materials that Can Lead to Soil Pollution
To minimize wildlife entanglement and plastic debris pollution, choose temporary erosion and sediment control products that either do not contain netting, or that contain netting manufactured from 100% biodegradable non-plastic materials such as jute, sisal, or coir fiber. Degradable, photodegradable, UV-degradable, oxo-degradable, or oxo-biodegradable plastic netting (including polypropylene, nylon, polyethylene, and polyester) are not acceptable alternatives.
All netting materials used should have a wildlife-safe, loose-weave design with movable, non-welded joints between the horizontal and vertical twines, allowing the twines to move independently and thus reducing the potential for wildlife entanglement. Erosion control blankets and mats should be staked down to the ground and secured with wooded stakes and have the edges buried. Netting that is elongated (rectangular), not square, reduce wildlife entanglements. Avoid the use of silt fences reinforced with metal mesh or plastic mesh. When no longer required, temporary erosion and sediment control products should be promptly removed, usually as soon as vegetation establishes in the soil.
